Product Details

The interactions between biological systems and the resulting functions and behaviors that can be observed, provide the cornerstone to characterizing the complex connections between cellular processes. The main objective of the systems biology approach is to model all of the interactions in a given system, typically integrating information from genomic, metabolomic, and proteomic fields of research to assemble an accurate representation. For researchers seeking to integrate data across applications, platforms, and collaborations, Agilent offers GeneSpring Workgroup, a robust, highly scalable analysis platform for managing and mining data in a workgroup or an enterprise setting. GeneSpring Workgroup combines a rich set of analytical tools with a series of programmatic interfaces that enable multi-campus enterprises to work collaboratively in a secure setting and maximize the value of their research. The GeneSpring Workgroup architecture is the foundation of an expanding suite of applications designed to store multiple data types including gene expression, genotyping, comparative genomic hybridization, and proteomics data.

Figure 1. Application Program Interfaces (APIs) introduced in GeneSpring Workgroup.
The GeneSpring Workgroup SOAP API allows programmatic access to many of the data types within
GeneSpring Workgroup. SOAP is rapidly becoming a standard for web service applications and
the GeneSpring Workgroup API allows users and administrators to create custom applications
that can directly utilize data in GeneSpring Workgroup. In addition, GeneSpring Workgroup
includes a remote server native Java Plug-in API, giving GeneSpring GX users an interface
to applications deployed on a server farm.
"Genespring Workgroup has the flexibility to act as an enterprise 'omics data warehouse
while also allowing developers to build additional functionality using the
extensive APIs. This is the main reason why we favored this product as it
allows us to integrate the system with our existing databases and tools and
also build-out new functionality using scripting in languages such as R, Java
and Python. The APIs allow us to extensively search the database using
sample annotation attributes—this was very important to us and will
enable broader use of 'omics data within the enterprise."
